  • Artist Statement

    Dot Wilkin is a Sydney artist/educator who has been producing striking visual images since her school days. She has held exhibitions at Parliament House in Sydney and Canberra and has participated in numerous major group exhibitions. She has won several significant awards, most recently the Nora Heysen Award in 2009. There is a spiritual emphasis in much of her work with a second major theme being the Australian landscape. She works in a wide range of media, including oil and acrylic painting, etching, screen printing, digital and mixed media.

    She has qualifications in both the arts and in education, and her professional education reflects her commitment in both fields. In her initial Art Certificate studies (Meadowbank TAFE, 1986-87) she was awarded the prize for painting; she has subsequently obtained a Bachelor of Art Education (COFA, 1988-91) and a Masters of Contemporary Art for Educators (SCA, 2006). She has recently completed the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. She has taught art extensively in Sydney’s secondary schools, including William Clarke College and Regents Park Christian School.

    Dot’s project management, research and technical abilities are well-developed. She also has get-up-and-go and networking abilities of the highest order.

    In her role as and artist and educator, Dot is now working on an interesting project to write a history of the Macquarie Galleries, the first commercial gallery of modern art in Sydney. Mary Turner OAM, is her cousin (once removed) and she was a director of the Galleries from 1956–1979. She has enrolled a writer and a former HSC student as a researcher to work with Mary to write a systematic and comprehensive history of the Galleries and their influence on the shaping of Australian art. A film and exhibition are also planned.


    This research will include interviews and creative projects with former Macquarie Galleries artists now highly acclaimed, including John Olsen and Margaret Olley.


    Dot hopes to use her studio space to make work in response to this research, including landscapes from Mary’s life story. She also plans to ask Mary to visit the studio and sit for her portrait.
